"My journey was transformed through PIB's training and certification in artificial insemination and breeding. With their support, I became Zimbabwe's first woman certified in artificial insemination and the first female pig farmer to export breeding stock to Mozambique. Today, we manage a 120-sow herd with plans to grow to 500. PIB did not just train me, they empowered me to lead and break barriers in the industry."

CEO & Co-Founder, Nyagacity Piggery

Mrs. Letwinner Nyagano

"The Pig Industry Board has been a key partner in our pig enterprise success. Today, pigs are our cash cow despite occupying the smallest section of our farm. From sourcing breeding stock to staff training and extension support, PIB has consistently strengthened our operations. Their technical guidance has improved productivity and quality standards, while we also serve our community by hosting college students for attachment each year."

Owner, Imbizo Kraal Farm

Mr. Tichafa Mujuru

PIB's presence provides an important framework that promotes fairness, traceability, and confidence across the value chain. This has been valuable in shaping business decisions and improving risk awareness."

Frequently Asked Questions About PIB

  • 1. How do I start a pig production business?
There is need to get the basic information first before making any investment in the business so that one is able to start on the right footing. The information will include housing, breeds and breeding, feed costs, and marketing. Pig Industry Board has a technical department which can be contacted for information.
  • 2. What breed of pigs is best for Zimbabwean conditions?
For commercial production, exotic breeds, namely Large White, Landrace, Durocs and their crosses can be used. These breeds perform best where adequate feed is provided. Each breed has its unique characteristics which makes it suitable and by cross breeding, advantage of hybrid vigor is realized. Mukota, an indigenous breed can be used in non-commercial production where efficiency is not an issue as the breed produced small litter sizes and has slow growth. It survives better in harsh conditions, like during feed shortages.
  • 3. How can I improve growth rates and feed efficiency?
A number of factors come into play regarding improving growth rates and feed efficiency which are breed, feed quantity and quality, housing, stocking density, water, ideal environmental temperature, proper health management to reduce disease incidence, avoid inbreeding, reduce feed wastage
