The National Artificial Insemination (AI) Programme is an ongoing technical initiative implemented by the Pig Industry Board (PIB) to improve genetic quality, productivity, and biosecurity within Zimbabwe's pig industry. The programme was established in response to industry challenges including limited access to superior breeding boars, high disease transmission risks associated with natural mating, and inconsistent genetic performance across production systems.
Through structured semen collection, processing, quality control, and distribution services, PIB provides producers with access to high-performing genetic material in a cost-effective and controlled manner. The initiative also includes farmer training on Artificial Insemination techniques, breeding management, and performance record-keeping to ensure optimal conception rates, improved litter outcomes, and enhanced herd productivity.
Implemented as a continuous technical service and industry support function
Key achievements of our National AI Programme
The Artificial Insemination Programme represents PIB's commitment to modernising Zimbabwe's pig industry through science-driven solutions that enhance productivity, biosecurity, and sustainability. By strengthening genetic performance at the foundation level, the programme contributes directly to industry resilience, improved profitability for producers, and the long-term transformation of the national pig value chain.
Producers seeking access to Artificial Insemination services, technical training, or on-farm extension support are encouraged to contact PIB's Technical Services Unit:
Our technical team remains available to provide professional guidance, semen supply coordination, and breeding management support across the industry.
